Handwritten by the Tenth Sovereign King Himself, this document shows the original Gurbani that the Sikhs recite daily as part of their Nitnem, or their daily prayer routine.
This scripture (Pothi) belonged to Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
It was bestowed by the Tenth Master himself at Nanded to Bhai Dharam Singh Ji.
Bhai Dharam Singh Ji was the grandson of Bhai Roop Chand Ji, who is renowned in Sikh history as Bhai Roopa. His family has been connected to Sikhi and the Gurus' service since the time of the Fifth Guru. When Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, in 1630, laid the foundation stone and established the village of Roopa, he granted the leadership of the area and the entire estate of the village to Bhai Roop Chand Ji.
This was a political tradition established by the Sikh Gurus, which—while existing within the Mughal Empire—laid the foundation for a Sikh governance system. The Sixth Guru gave Bhai Roop Chand a Khanda (double-edged sword) and a Karchha (cooking ladle), symbolising the commitment to righteous governance and service to the people. He also instructed him to establish a langar (free community kitchen) at that very place.
For his residence, Bhai Roop Chand Ji built a room and set up a flour mill nearby for the langar. The Guru himself had stayed in that room, and two bricks from the Guru's room are still preserved at the home of the devotee.
Bhai Dharam Singh Ji, from the same family lineage of Bhai Roopa, journeyed alongside Guru Gobind Singh Ji to Nanded. However, the Guru soon sent Bhai Dharam Singh Ji back to Punjab to the village of Roopa and kept him close in spiritual service.
When Bhai Gurbakhsh Singh Ji (later known as Banda Singh Bahadur) was given Amrit (Sikh initiation) by the Tenth Guru—who himself renamed him from Madho Das to Gurbakhsh Singh and transformed him into a Khalsa warrior—the Guru sent him towards Punjab with the divine mission of establishing Khalsa rule under the sovereignty of Akal Purakh. Bhai Dharam Singh Ji also joined him on this campaign to Punjab.
At that time, Guru Gobind Singh Ji gifted this Gurbani Pothi Sahib (sacred scripture) from his own waist wrap to Bhai Dharam Singh Ji as a blessing and a symbol of the spiritual and temporal mission of the Khalsa Panth. Bhai Dharam Singh Ji fought all the battles alongside Bhai Gurbakhsh Singh Ji until the conquest of Sirhind.
